"Nick Young's songwriting has maturity that belies his relative youth. Although
his band Burning Daylight churns out plenty twang and jangle-rhythm, the 12
titles that make up their Youth Dew release "Whiskey and Romances" never
force the stylistic issue. In fact, for every alt-country bar-rocker such as
"Sneaking Suspicion", there is a power-pop gem in a song like "Louisville", or a
hybrid Buddy Holly meets punk shape-shifter like "Black Soul, Black Heart".
This takes musical maturity.
Each selection on this fine long player leverages a fully-baked song in its core.
Mr. Young and company choose to wrap their work in the way that is most
complimentary to the song within.
The beauty in Burning Daylight's work lies in its confidence and belief in, first
and foremost, the song. It takes guts to trust a song to any number of stylistic
vehicles. The result is a record that invites you into a number of musical
environments and atmospheres--one that is equally fun and engaging. Highly
recommended summer listening."
